ROANOKE ISLAND, SHOWING THE CONFEDERATE FORTS

This Civil War-era map of Roanoke Island shows the location of the Confederate forts. After the Battle of Roanoke Island, the forts were renamed in honor of the three Union generals who had led the troops to victory--Generals John G. Foster, John G. Parke, and Jesse L. Reno. Fort Huger became Fort Reno, Fort Blanchard became Fort Parke, and Fort Bartow became Fort Foster. [Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, 13 (15 March 1862): 267]
